SUMMERHILL SCHOOL, A New View of Childhood, by A.S. NEILL, edited by ALBERT LAMB. Originally published in 1960, this book became an instant bestseller and a classic on education for an entire generation. Extracts from many of Neill's 20 books weave a narrative that includes the founding and maintaining of the first school run by children as well as adults, and also Neill's own story and the many changes that he lived to see. Now more than ever, as growing numbers of American children are drugged into obedience and artificial "socialisation", Neill challenges us to rethink our approach to education. This new revised and expanded paperback edition contains the chapter on Reich again that was signally missing in the previous American edition. 269 pp. ![]() * A FREE-RANGE CHILDHOOD: Self Regulation at Summerhill School, by MATHEW APPLETON. Summerhill is probably Britain's most famous school. Its radical philosophy of education has led to constant conflict with the educational establishment. In response to attempts to close the school, Summerhill has challenged the government in court, and triumphed over what is described as "the tyranny of compulsory lessons and exams". This book is Appleton's insightful and delightful story of his nine years as houseparent at the school, the only first-hand account to emerge from the school since Neill's death in 1973. 272 pp. ![]()

Neill's controversial school in Suffolk UK has since the mid-20th Century wielded an enormous influence on child training throughout the world. His seminar book, Summerhill: A Radical Approach to Child Rearing (see above under new title) has sold widely around the world, with much influence. The title of this autobiography, taken from a jingle coined by a tyke at Summerhill who follwed Neill around chanting it, is the key to the personality of this unusual man. Instead of standing on his dignity and feeling disrespected, Neill regarded the rhyme as a tribute of affection. 538 pp. ![]() * NEILL OF SUMMERHILL: The Permanent Rebel, by Jonathan Croall.
Arguably the most famous children's educator of this century, A.S. Neill is without doubt the most controversial. At a time when there is so much drug-abuse, suicide and even murder in schools, great unhappiness among children, an open call to revisit the very nature of this institution is surely in order. This biography covers Neill's early years as a conventional schoolteacher -- or "Dominee" (as in Domination) -- to his break with an independence from that circumstance, to the founding of his own school. He battled to keep Summerhill School alive and running for more than 50 years, a lifelong struggle for the hearts of children, which he won on the emotional-social level, but risked losing more than once in struggles with the hostile educational bureaucracy of governments and teachers unions. This book covers his life and work, and is a gripping read. 436 pp. ![]() |
